Homeschool STEAM-Integrated Lesson Plan for "The Wild Robot"

Grade Level: 3-5

1. Engage

  • Activity: Start by discussing with your child what they know about robots and their roles. Watch a short clip from "The Wild Robot" together to introduce Roz and spark curiosity.
  • Discussion Prompts:
  • What do you think a robot's purpose is?
  • How might Roz adapt to living in the wild?

2. Explore

  • Activity: Choose a habitat from the movie (e.g., forest, river) and explore it with your child. Use books or online resources to learn about the animals living there and brainstorm how Roz might interact with them.
  • Materials: Books, internet access, paper, and colored pencils for drawing.

3. Explain

  • Activity: Discuss the themes of family, community, and survival. Share personal stories or examples that relate to these themes.
  • Media Literacy: Talk about how animation and voice acting bring characters to life. Watch a scene and discuss how visuals and sound enhance the story.

4. Elaborate

  • Activity: Encourage your child to create a storyboard for a new scene where Roz helps an animal in a unique way. They can draw and write out dialogue, setting, and actions.
  • Arts Integration: Use Monet-like painting techniques to illustrate the storyboard.
  • Math Connection: Calculate distances Roz might travel or estimate the time for an egg to hatch using simple math exercises.

5. Evaluate

  • Activity: Have your child present their storyboard to the family, explaining their creative process and how they incorporated the movie's themes.
  • Assessment: Use a simple checklist to evaluate creativity, understanding of themes, and integration of STEAM elements.
